2023 Award Recipients
Philip Alderson, MD
Dr. Philip Alderson is receiving the Gold Medal of the New York State Radiological Society for his exceptional service to organized Radiology.
In 1980, Dr. Alderson came from Johns Hopkins to Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons as Professor of Radiology. He remained there until 2008, serving on numerous committees, including as Director of Nuclear Medicine, Director of the Radiology Residency Program, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Radiology and subsequently James Picker Chairman of Radiology as well as President of the Medical Board of New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Alderson has been President of numerous radiological societies, including the Fleischner Society, the American Roentgen Ray Society, from which he received its Gold Medal, the Association of Program Directors in Radiology and the American Board of Radiology. He has written over 150 referred articles and numerous book chapters.
In 1975, Dr. Alderson joined the American College of Radiology and has served on multiple committees and in numerous capacities in the ACR, including as a member of the Board of Chancellors and Vice-President of the ACR in 1999.
During his time in New York, Dr. Alderson was active in the New York Roentgen Society, serving as its President. He was subsequently awarded its Distinguished Radiologist Award .
He was a member of the New York State Radiological Society from 1981-2008. and served as President in 1994.
Throughout his career, Dr. Alderson has encouraged radiologists to become involved in organized radiology. He is admired and respected by his numerous residents, peers and members of the organized radiology community. Dr. Alderson has worked tirelessly for all of us, and it is most fitting that he receive the Gold Medal of the New York State Radiological Society.
Mitchell Goldman, MD
Dr. Mitchell A. Goldman was a renowned radiologist who joined the radiology department at North Shore University Hospital in 1976. His expertise was in ultrasound. Dr. Goldman served as President of the Medical Staff at NSUH and Sr. Vice President of Physician Service at NSLIJ.
He was Chairman of the Department of Radiology at North Shore-LIJ from 1998-2010. He was a dedicated educator and served as a lecturer and course director for several prestigious organizations. Dr. Goldman was committed to organized radiology and served as President of the New York State Radiological Society, as well as a long-term councilor for the ACR.
In recognition of his contributions, the diagnostic imaging center in Lake Success was renamed The Mitchell A. Goldman Diagnostic Imaging Center in 2010.
Dr. Goldman’s commitment to excellence in leadership, teaching, and mentoring has had a lasting impact on the field of radiology and will continue to influence generations of radiologists to come.
Roger Hyman, MD
Dr. Roger A. Hyman was a highly esteemed radiologist who served as Chief of the Division of Neuroradiology at North Shore University Hospital before becoming Chairman of the Department of Radiology in 1992. He was widely respected as a diligent and thorough teacher and a visionary colleague. He brought digital imaging and PACS to the department, developed an MRI program, and instituted accreditation.
Dr. Hyman was deeply committed to organized radiology and played a key role in the ACR. He rose to become Vice Speaker of the Council, Speaker of the Council and a member of the Board of Chancellors and served with the highest measure of professionalism and integrity.
His many contributions to the field of radiology and the medical community at large continue to inspire and influence future generations. The conference room in the Department of Radiology was named The Roger A. Hyman, M.D. Conference Room in his honor. After his passing in 1998, the ACR set forth a memorial resolution to pay tribute to his leadership and contributions.
Philip Pinsky
Philip Pinsky was a highly respected and prominent attorney in upstate New York for fifty years in the Syracuse and Albany regions.
He received his undergraduate degree and law degree from Syracuse University, where he subsequently served as an adjunct professor of law and as a member of the Board of Advisors to the law school.
He was the assistant counsel to the New York Senate Majority and the State Commission on Child Welfare. He subsequently entered the private practice of law, and was a senior partner at Pinsky and Skandalis, based in Syracuse, where he practiced over the years with his father, brother and son.
Involved in his community throughout his life, Phil was president of the Syracuse Jewish Federation and the NYS Association of Jewish Federations, and served on the boards of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse University Theatre Corp, and the United Way of central New York and of New York State.
Phil proudly served as our New York State Radiological Society counsel for 28 years, until his passing July 23, 2011 at his summer home on Wellesley Island, NY. Over those many years, his experienced professional advice guided our membership and officers on important legislative and governmental issues affecting the practice of Radiology and our society. We were fortunate to have had the
opportunity to work with Phil for many years.
