New York Eliminates Cost Barriers for Lung Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Services 🏆

The New York State Radiological Society is pleased to share that Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation (A1195-A, Peoples-Stokes/S2000-A, Addabbo) requiring health insurers to cover follow-up lung cancer screening and diagnostic services.

The Society strongly supported this measure, which represents an important step forward in saving lives through earlier detection of lung cancer.

Under the new law, health insurers in New York must cover follow-up lung cancer screening and diagnostic services and may not impose cost-sharing for these services.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths and disproportionately impacts Black and Latino New Yorkers. By removing financial barriers, this law will help ensure timely access to critical screenings that can identify cancer at earlier, more treatable stages and significantly improve survival rates.

The Society extends its sincere appreciation to legislative bill sponsors, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes and Senator Joseph Addabbo for championing this policy, and to Governor Hochul for her continued commitment to strengthening preventive healthcare for all New Yorkers.
