Starting off our NYSRS Spotlight series with Dr. Hentel, MD our wonderful immediate past president of the NYSRS.
1. Introduce Yourself
I’m Dr. Benjamin Hentel — a board-certified diagnostic radiologist, Fellow of the ACR, and Immediate Past President of the New York State Radiological Society (NYSRS). I also co-chair the NYSRS Social Media/Communications Committee. I earned my MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed my residency and Body MRI fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical Center. I practiced for over 16 years with Hudson Valley Radiologists, and I am joining Norwalk Radiology Consultants. I’m also Executive Vice President of Radloop and an honorary contributing editor for Radiopaedia.
2. Why Radiology?
Radiology is in my blood. My father was a radiologist, and he was truly inspirational — a giant among men. Growing up watching him care for the community and dedicate himself to the field left a deep impression on me. When my brother followed him into radiology, that was the nail in the coffin — I knew it was the path for me too.
I’ve also always been drawn to technology, and radiology is one of the most tech-forward specialties in medicine.
3. Favorite Moment/Experience with NYSRS
There are so many moments and experiences to pick from, but two things really stand out. First, the people. NYSRS gave me the chance to work alongside my brother, Dr. Keith Hentel, again — something we hadn’t done since 2009 — and to connect with spectacular people at every career stage, from medical students like Austin Young and Arvind Dev to newfound mentors like Dr. Robert Rapoport and Bob Pizzutiello, to energetic, dedicated leaders like Dr. Elizabeth Maltin. Second, the advocacy work that the ACR does nationally and NYSRS does at the state level to protect our profession and our patients — being part of that has been incredibly rewarding.
4. Plans for the Future
As mentioned above, I am joining Norwalk Radiology Consultants. I will be working alongside my mentor and friend, Dr. Richard Friedland (who is also a past NYSRS president). I plan to continue my work with Radloop and NYSRS, and hope to get involved with the Radiological Society of Connecticut.
