Introducing Dr. Stamatia Destounis MD, FACR, FSBI, FAIUM. She is the NYSRS representative to the 2026 Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) House of Delegates. She is also a breast radiologist that has practiced in Rochester New York at a large outpatient private breast center called Elizabeth Wende Breast Care since 1993. She completed a breast fellowship in 1993 after her radiology residency at University of Rochester. She has lived in Rochester since 12 when her family migrated from Athens, Greece.
1. Why Radiology?
During medical school I had the great fortune of doing a Radiology elective and reviewing images with some of the bets teachers I had ever encountered. They made me realize how important imaging was and how relevant the field was to patient care and improving health and wellness for each patient. The excitement with which these mentors interpreted a chest xray or a CT was amazing and made quite the impact.
2. Favorite Moment/Experience with NYSRS
I enjoy the mission for education and advocacy that resonates within our society. I will continue to work on the networking aspect as there are members that are huge models of success within our organizations.
3. Plans for the Future
Continue the good work the team had done before me to increase membership and support the radiology community within our state and advocate for radiology in this changing climate.
4. Advice for medical students interested in radiology
Visit the radiology department at your institution, speak with a current radiology resident, do an elective. Radiology has so much to offer, hands on interventional work, patient contact, research and academic opportunities what ever you may think you would like.
5. Fun fact about you!
I have three boys that I adore all adults now my oldest is a 3rd year radiology resident and one of my sons got married and my daughter in law is a first year radiology resident. I couldn’t be happier with the choices they made for their specialty.
