NPs and PAs Are Now Authorized to Supervise Contrast Media Administration in NY

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation into law allowing nurse practitioners and physician assistants to provide direct supervision of radiologic technologists administering intravenous contrast media!

Prior to the enactment of the new law, only physicians were authorized to supervise this process. Extending this authorization to nurse practitioners and physician assistants under the general supervision of a physician will help ensure timely access to imaging services such as contrast-enhanced CTs and MRIs.

The bill took effect immediately when it was signed by Governor Hochul on November 22, 2024.

This legislation upholds patient safety standards by ensuring that the provider of direct supervision must be immediately available to provide assistance and direction throughout the performance of the procedure, consistent with American College of Radiology guidelines which recognize nurse practitioners and physician assistants as providers who are trained in and capable of managing an acute hypersensitivity contrast reaction.

The Society advocated strongly in support of this legislation, and thanks the legislative bill sponsors, Assemblymember Amy Paulin and Senator Gustavo Rivera. The Society also worked closely with Greater New York Hospital Association and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East to develop the bill and appreciates their collaboration in supporting this legislation.

We would like to thank members of the New York State Radiological Society for your support of this new law which will help patients receive necessary imaging, thereby aiding in timely patient diagnosis and treatment.

Please let us know if you have any questions as the new law is implemented.
