Introducing Elizabeth Maltin, MD!! She is the Chair of the Membership Committee for the NYSRS and a neuroradiologist in private practice at Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology on Long Island.
1. Why you decided to go into radiology
I became interested in Radiology as a third year medical student when I rotated through vascular surgery. I got involved doing research correlating the accuracy of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the carotids with the gold standard of conventional catheter angiography. This was some of the earliest research on MRA and I got hooked! Choosing a subspecialty once I was a resident was hard because I found so many specialties really interesting. I chose neuroradiology because it offered the chance to do procedures as well as read CT and MR.
2. Favorite moment/experience as part of the NYSRS
My most gratifying experience has been chairing the Membership Committee. I really enjoy working with my fellow committee members to come up with new ideas to engage our members in order to retain and grow our society membership. The last few meetings we have sponsored residents from programs far from NYC, where our meetings are held, to join us and learn about the NYSRS and what it has to offer. I love when I can see sparks of interest in new eyes!
3. Plans for the future
The Membership Committee is working on initiatives to attract members that have recently finished training and there are plans to foster cross-chapter collaboration for the benefit of all state chapters. I really enjoy brainstorming with my colleagues on new ways to engage. Outside of radiology, I am honing my skills on the pickleball court and the Mah Jongg table!
4. Advice for medical students interested in radiology
If you think you might be interested in radiology, make sure to do a rotation if electives are offered. And join the NYSRS! It’s free! Come to one of our All-Members meetings in the Spring or Fall and talk to us! We are all happy to share what our lives are like at work and outside of the reading room. Meeting people who love what they do and can tell you why can make a difference. The coolest thing about radiology is you can be involved in many fields of medicine through imaging – surgical specialties, medical specialties, GYN, pediatrics and more.
5. Fun fact about you!
“And though she be but little, she is fierce.” William Shakespeare So….when my young son was taking classes in mixed martial arts, I decided to join the moms who were also taking classes. I competed in multiple events and after several years, vertically-challenged me (just shy of 5′ tall) earned a black belt in mixed martial arts! Never doubt what you can do if you try 🙂
